- PNLInfo Browser
- Version 1.04, Macintosh
- Installation and Setup Instructions
-
- Welcome
-
- PNLInfo Browser is a cross-platform gopher+ based client for
- Internet browsing. Versions are available or in development for
- Windows, Macintosh, Sun Motif, and DEC OSF/1 Motif.
-
- This document explains how to install and set up PNLInfo Browser,
- version 1.04 for Macintosh.
-
- Requirements
-
- This version requires the following:
- - System 7 or better
- - The system must be connected to the Internet
- - MacTCP 1.1 or better
-
- Checking the files
-
- After downloading and uncompressing the files, you should have
- the following:
- PNLInfo Browser (the PNLInfo Browser program itself)
- infobrws.hlp (the help information)
- infobrws_prefs (preferences file)
- readme (this file)
-
- Installing the files
-
- First, be sure to exit PNLInfo Browser if it is running on your
- system! Overwriting executables or preferences files in use can cause
- problems.
-
- The PNLInfo Browser application and help file need to be together in a
- folder of your choice. Copy the preferences file to your
- System Preferences folder. (While it is possible to edit the preferences file with a text editor, we do NOT encourage this. It is possible to
- confuse the application by hand-editing, and most things you
- would want to change can be done from within the application.)
-
- Starting up the application
-
- Start PNLInfo Browser by double-clicking its icon. It will start
- by connecting to the default "home" gopher server. If the
- application complains or is not able to connect, see the Trouble-
- shooting section below.
-
- There are several ways you can customize the application. To set
- the "home" location, select General Setup from the Options menu.
- Other items under the Options menu let you set the background
- color, turn on inline display of abstracts, and turn off the
- "verify quit" message.
-
- To help you explore the application, see the online help and the tutorial (select Open a Browser at Tutorial from the File menu). The tutorial will
- actually do a network connection to PNL's public server, so it
- can be a good way to test out some simple network actions.
-
- Trouble-shooting
-
- If at any time, the application is not able to connect to a
- remote server, first try connecting to another server. Next, try
- exiting and restarting it. If it is still unable to connect (or
- if it has never been able to connect), the most likely reason is
- the TCP/IP.
-
- PNLInfo Browser has a known conflict with Quickeys. We recommend that you NOT run PNLInfo Browser with Quickeys.
-
- If you get repeated errors like "unable to retrieve that item
- [3440]" and are not able to view any items, it may be that your
- download folder is full or setup incorrectly. PNLInfo Browser
- creates a folder called Download where it puts temporary
- files. If there is no space for any new files, you will get
- errors any time you try to view things. To fix this, rearrange
- or delete items to make space, or move the application to an area
- with more space.
-
- Feedback to PNL
-
- We welcome feedback on PNLInfo Browser. If you have problems,
- please describe the actions that led up to the problem, any error
- messages that the application showed (including the message
- number, if any), and any pertinent information about the
- particular item(s) you were trying to access.
-
- Send comments, suggestions, and bug reports to info-browser@pnl.gov.
